Free Kindle From Amazon?

kindle dx ebook reader

The Tech Crunch blog is making a bold statement, when it said (on Feb. 12th) that Amazon MIGHT giveaway a free Kindle to “Prime” subscribers.

The story (or should I say rumor) is that Amazon wants to gift a Kindle to its very best customers, those who sign-up for the Prime shipping program. These are the customers who make multiple purchases on Amazon monthly and also most likely buy lots of ebooks as well. But may (or may not) own a Kindle, yet.

Amazon is betting that the Kindle freebie offer, entices “Prime” customers to go for it.

This is a rumor at the moment, no official word has come out from Amazon, so hold your wallets for now. But we’ll keep you posted if (and when) this happens.

What Will Ebook Prices Cost When iPad Launches?

There’s a lot of talk and buzz lately on ebook prices, especially since Apple announced their iPad tablet. What’s interesting to me, is that the iPad isn’t really billed or marketed as a digital reader. Yet, it’s already forcing changes in the ebook reader space.

Unbelievable!

Or maybe not. They have a force and sheer network no one can compete with. Not even Amazon. Not too mention a legion of high-income crazed fans, who will literally pay ANY price Apple places on  any of their products.

What is the latest in the Amazon versus Apple war? Another big publisher Hachette Books has withdrawn from the $9.99 price point for NYT best sellers. An absolute blow to Amazon and it’s low price ebook model. And this is before the iPad has even launched. It seems Apple is out to monopolize the ebook reader space as it has done with digital music and iTunes.

It’s clear now that those who complained the Kindle is too pricey and why buy an ebook at $9.99 when you can’t loan it, sell it or place it in your book shelf – will have to shell out ALOT more for both an ebook reader and ebooks. Well, assuming you just can’t live without another highly hyped Apple product. And c’mon, let’s face it – Apple iPad sales (come March) will be through the roof.

Higher priced ebooks suck for small book publishers, independent book shops, and of course avid book readers.

But the question remains, what will ebook prices cost when the iPad launches in March?

Do You Want Your Kindle To Multi Task?

That pretty much seems to be the Kindle QUESTION in 2010. Because of competing digital readers and of course, the omni-potent and all mighty Apple iPad, Apple iSlate (or whatever it ends up being called), many are proclaiming that it should do more or BE MORE than a digital book reader.

But why?

It’s clear that Kindle owners don’t want it to BE MORE. They simply want to READ BOOKS through the Amazon device. Read below two quotes from the recent article posted on PC World.

The Kindle is NOT competing with the iPad. The Kindle is not intended to be a computer. It’s a book. A BOOK. BOOOOK. Read my lips. BOOOOK. I didn’t buy a Kindle to read email, play games, mess with Facebook, or do my bank statements on. I want a simple reliable device that I use to disappear into novels. I do NOT want it to do 1000 other things. Why is this so hard for tech journalists to understand?

I totally agree with this comment. Technies just do not get it. I love my Kindle. I read a lot of books. The Kindle makes it easier for me to read books, which I love to do. Reading books on the Kindle is superior to reading books on a computer or in a real live book. If I can also do a few other things on my Kindle, that is nice, but not necessary. I would NOT want my Kindle to mimic a computer. I have a smart phone and a computer for that.

What telling quotes. And these come from Kindle owners. Those who buy and use the device for its intended purpose, which is “to read”.

There’s talk lately about Amazon adding development for Kindle apps, which would mean things like:

  • Games
  • Photos
  • Music
  • Shopping
  • Social Networking Tools
  • and much more

Do Kindle owners want all this extra functionality? It’s clear they don’t. And it’s also clear the biggest appeal is the e-ink display. Not the flash and dash of say, an iPhone screen or other smartphone screen.

Question?

Are you excited about the announcement from Amazon, regarding Kindle apps? Or will “these apps” just become a distraction from the reading?

Beatrix Potter Books Available Via Kindle

Sometimes, two great ideas that are as diverse as chalk and cheese come together to give us the most amazing of experiences. One such idea is the Amazon Kindle. Its like a library that is portable and fits in your backpack. Amazon Kindle is the new book reading software device launched by Amazon heralding a new era for book lovers. Now you can carry as many books as you want without being saddled by the weight.

What’s an even more amazing idea is having all the books by your favorite author on such a platform. The name that comes to mind here is Beatrix Potter. If you’ve grown up following the adventures of Peter the Rabbit, and an you are an ardent fan of ‘The Pie and the Patty Pan‘ then buying an Amazon Kindle will be the best gift you can give to yourself.

Amazon Kindle offers the entire collection of Beatrix Potter books, illustrated as well as text versions. Some of the popular works of Beatrix Potter included in the Amazon Kindle series are:

  • Johnny Town-Mouse
  • Timmy Tiptoes
  • Flopsy Bunnies
  • Miss Moppet
  • Pipling Bland
  • Ginger and Pickles
  • Benjamin Bunny
  • Tom Kitten
  • Jeremy Fisher (to name just a few)

You can browse through the collection using keywords, tags, and table of contents. The Kindle interface is easy to navigate through and the screen easy on eyes. Great for kids, too! In fact, this is a growing segment within Kindle users.

So? What are you waiting for? Grab your copy…err…the entire Beatrix Potter collection in one go…today!

How To Replace The Battery On A Kindle 2

Whether you received the Amazon Kindle 2 as a gift this year or treated yourself to the wireless digital reader, at some point in the future you will want or need to replace the battery.

But how?

Great question and that is what we are here for. We will start by letting you know that on the Kindle 2 the battery is not replaceable (or more aptly put) it can’t be removed. For some unknown reason (some speculate to make it lighter) Amazon decided to keep the Kindle battery a thing of mystery.

However all is not lost, as you can depending on your circumstance, ask for a replacement KINDLE. The device itself.

As one would imagine, there are stipulations and they are as follows. You can request a replacement Kindle if:

  • the device is still under warranty
  • the device is not operable

So not entirely an easy replacement, but if you meet the requirements above you just might score a brand new Kindle. Be sure to check your warranty and give Amazon a call or send off an email support query.

Or

You can bypass Amazon altogether and purchase a third-party battery made for the Kindle 2, such as the one sold on Amazon from BatteryBob.com. However this can null and void your warranty and if anything should happen to your beloved Kindle while you’re trying to DIY, you could be SOL.

Your call.
